Our Heavenly Inheritance
Main Bible Passage: 1 Peter 1:3-5
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.”
In a world where things are constantly changing and fading, the promise of a lasting inheritance offers us comfort and hope. As believers, we are given a heavenly inheritance through Jesus Christ—one that is eternal and unblemished. Understanding the nature of this inheritance deepens our appreciation for God’s mercy and encourages us to live with a forward-looking faith.
Our heavenly inheritance begins with a “new birth” into a “living hope.” This new birth represents a complete transformation from our old life of sin to a new life of righteousness, made possible through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This hope is not dead or inactive; it is living, dynamic, and vibrant because it is anchored in the reality of Christ’s resurrection. It assures us of the certainty of God’s promises and the future that awaits us.
The inheritance promised to us is described as one that “can never perish, spoil or fade.” Earthly inheritances are temporary and can be lost, devalued, or corrupted. However, the inheritance God has for us is secure and eternal. It is not subject to decay, deterioration, or loss. This inheritance includes eternal life, a relationship with God, and the fullness of His blessings—things that are far more valuable than anything the world can offer.
Peter also assures us that this inheritance is “kept in heaven” for us, highlighting its divine protection. God Himself safeguards it, ensuring that it remains untouched by earthly circumstances. Additionally, we, as believers, are “shielded by God’s power” through faith. Our faith is the channel through which we receive God’s power and protection until the day when our full salvation is revealed. This means that God is actively involved in both preserving our inheritance and protecting us as we journey toward it.
Understanding that our inheritance is reserved in heaven encourages us to live with an eternal perspective. It reminds us that our true treasures are not on earth but in heaven. This realization helps us endure present trials with patience and hope, knowing that they are temporary and cannot compare to the eternal glory that awaits us.
