30-Aug-2024 || Living for Eternity

In a world where things are constantly changing and fading, the promise of a lasting inheritance offers us comfort and hope. As believers, we are given a heavenly inheritance through Jesus Christ—one that is eternal and unblemished. Understanding the nature of this inheritance deepens our appreciation for God's mercy and encourages us to live with a forward-looking faith.

Living for Eternity

Main Bible Passage: Colossians 3:1-2

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

As followers of Christ, our lives are meant to be lived with eternity in view. The temporary nature of this world and its concerns contrasts sharply with the eternal realities that await us in God’s presence. Colossians 3:1-2 encourages us to shift our focus from the transient things of earth to the eternal things of heaven, where Christ reigns. This eternal perspective transforms the way we live, make decisions, and interact with the world around us.

When Paul writes that we have been “raised with Christ,” he is reminding us of our new identity and position as believers. Through faith in Jesus, we have been spiritually resurrected from a life of sin and death to a new life in Christ. This new life is characterized by a different set of priorities and values—those that reflect the kingdom of God rather than the fleeting concerns of this world.

“Set your hearts on things above” is a call to direct our deepest affections and desires toward heavenly realities. It means making the pursuit of God, His kingdom, and His righteousness our primary focus. This doesn’t mean we neglect our earthly responsibilities, but rather that we approach them with a perspective rooted in eternity. Our love for God and His purposes should drive our actions, decisions, and relationships, guiding us to live in a way that honors Him.

In addition to setting our hearts on things above, we are also instructed to “set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” This requires a deliberate shift in our thinking. It involves choosing to dwell on what is eternal—God’s word, His promises, His character, and the hope of heaven—rather than being consumed by the temporary concerns and distractions of this world. By aligning our thoughts with God’s truth, we renew our minds and gain clarity on what truly matters.

Living for eternity also means being mindful of the impact our lives have on others. Our actions, words, and decisions can either reflect the values of this world or the values of God’s kingdom. When we live with eternity in mind, we become more intentional about sharing the gospel, serving others, and investing in what has lasting significance. This perspective gives us purpose and direction, motivating us to live in a way that brings glory to God and advances His kingdom.

Life Application:
Take time today to assess where your heart and mind are focused. Are there areas where you are more preoccupied with earthly concerns than with eternal realities? Ask God to help you realign your priorities and to set your heart and mind on things above. Consider how you can live more intentionally for eternity in your daily life—through your relationships, work, and spiritual growth. Let the hope of heaven shape your perspective, decisions, and actions, and strive to live in a way that reflects the eternal kingdom of God.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for raising me with Christ and giving me a new life that is rooted in eternity. Help me to set my heart and mind on things above, where Christ is seated at Your right hand. Guide me to live each day with an eternal perspective, valuing what truly matters and investing in what will last. May my life reflect the hope of heaven and bring glory to You in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
